The Art of Jagua

A different plant, a different color story

Traditional Jagua body-art stain is derived from Genipa americana, a tropical fruit with a history of body-painting use among Indigenous peoples in parts of Central and South America. Those traditions are diverse and belong to the communities that maintain them.

Jagua creates a temporary blue to blue-black stain on the outer skin. It is not permanent tattoo ink and is not injected into the skin. Its final color develops gradually after removal; a faint initial design does not necessarily mean it has failed.

Jagua is not black henna

Jagua and natural henna come from different plants. The term “black henna” is often used for products darkened with other dyes, sometimes including PPD. A product’s name or dark color alone does not establish its ingredients or safety. Ask about the actual product used, especially if you have allergies or sensitive skin.

Henna or Jagua?

Natural Henna
Plant: Lawsonia inermis leaves.
Color: warm reddish-brown to brown.
Development: initially orange/light, deepening over roughly 24–48 hours.
Early care: gently remove dried paste and minimize early water exposure when practical.

Jagua
Plant: Genipa americana fruit.
Color: cooler blue to blue-black.
Development: may initially be faint; commonly develops over 24–48 hours.
Early care: follow the actual product’s removal and washing instructions. Henna’s dry-removal routine is not a substitute.
